Tribute to Joseph Rodan Jnr

Athletics Fiji mourns the passing of Joseph Rodan Junior (JJ), one of Fiji’s most accomplished all-round athletes and a respected leader whose contribution to athletics extended far beyond his competitive career.

JJ’s life in the sport was marked by excellence, versatility and service. As an athlete, administrator and coach, he played a significant role in shaping athletics in Fiji and strengthening its standing across Oceania.

A Champion Athlete for Fiji

JJ stands among Fiji’s most successful multi-event athletes of the modern era. Over more than a decade of international competition, he represented Fiji with distinction at regional, Pacific, Oceania and Commonwealth level.

JJ’s athletic career was defined by exceptional versatility and sustained success across multiple disciplines and competition levels. His achievements include:

  • Four-time Pacific Games and Mini Games Gold Medalist in the Decathlon (1995, 1997, 1999, 2003), an enduring record of dominance across four Games cycles
  • Two-time Commonwealth Games representative, competing at Kuala Lumpur 1998 and Manchester 2002
  • Current Oceania Indoor Area Record holder in the 50m Hurdles
  • Current Fiji National Record holder in the Pole Vault (4.45m), achieved during the decathlon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games
  • Fiji All-Time Rankings: 2nd in the Decathlon, 2nd in the 110m Hurdles and 6th in the Long Jump, reflecting the quality and breadth of his performances
  • Oceania Athletics Championships Under 18: Silver medals in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles (1994)

Notably, JJ became the youngest male decathlete to win gold at the Pacific Games, achieving this at just 17 years of age, an early marker of a career built on discipline, range and competitive excellence.

Following his early international success, JJ was awarded a scholarship to the University of California, Irvine, where he spent six years studying and competing, and was named UC Irvine Varsity Athlete of the Year in 2001 while continuing to represent Fiji internationally.

Leadership and Service to Athletics Fiji

Following his competitive career, JJ moved into leadership and administration, bringing clear strategic thinking and strong athlete-centred values to Athletics Fiji.

He served as Vice President and in senior development roles, contributing to governance reform, national team planning, sponsorship acquisition and the establishment of long-term athlete and coaching pathways.

JJ also served as Athletics Section Manager for Team Fiji at the 2018 Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast) and the 2019 Pacific Games (Samoa), overseeing athlete preparation and competition operations. Through these roles, he played a key part in strengthening and athletics administration in Fiji.

Through these contributions, JJ helped modernise athletics administration in Fiji and strengthen systems to support future generations.

Service on the FASANOC Executive Board

In 2018, Joseph Rodan Jnr was elected as a Vice President of  Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee reflecting the confidence placed in his leadership across the sporting community.

In this role, JJ focused on strengthening governance, supporting National Federations and improving preparation for international competition. He consistently advocated for structured athlete pathways, long-term development systems and closer collaboration across sporting bodies.

Through his service on the FASANOC Executive Board, JJ contributed to a more coordinated and athlete-focused national sporting system.

Contribution at Oceania Level

At the regional level, JJ was a respected and influential figure. He served as a Council Member of the Oceania Athletics Association from 2019 to 2023 and as Chair of the OAA Development Commission, advocating strongly for smaller Pacific nations and equitable development opportunities.

In recognition of his sustained contribution, he was awarded the Oceania Athletics Association Merit Award in 2016 and later inducted into the Fiji National Olympic Committee Hall of Fame in 2019.

Coach, Mentor and Educator

JJ remained deeply connected to athletes at the grassroots level. He coached national-level athletes, supported emerging talent and played a significant role in school athletics, including coaching Saint Joseph Secondary School at the Coca-Cola Games.

Those he coached speak of his ability to combine technical knowledge with calm authority, high standards and genuine care. He believed strongly in athlete education, personal development and long-term growth, values shaped by his own experiences as a student-athlete abroad and as a professional beyond sport.

A Lasting Legacy

Above all, JJ will be remembered as a man who gave generously to athletics. He was a competitor who set benchmarks, a leader who strengthened systems and a mentor who invested deeply in people.

Athletics Fiji extends its deepest condolences to JJ’s wife and children and to the Rodan family, with special acknowledgement of Joseph Rodan Senior, whose own contribution to athletics and the Olympic movement is inseparable from JJ’s journey.

We also extend our sympathies to the wider athletics community. JJ’s legacy lives on in the athletes he inspired, the structures he helped build and the standards he set for service to sport.

Rest in peace, JJ.
Your contribution to Fiji athletics endures.
