YALAVOU & PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS KIDS’ ATHLETICS

Prostate Cancer Awareness Kids’ Athletics

Athletics Fiji in partnership with the Suva Oldies Rugby conducted a joint program at the Sacred Heart College grounds on Saturday November 25 from 10am – 12pm in support of the Prostate Cancer awareness initiative. Athletics Fiji was approached by officials from the Suva Rugby Oldies Rugby Association if we could conduct a Kids Athletics Program along-side their rugby competition as part of the Prostate Cancer awareness initiative.

The Kids Athletics program was a great success and it attracted about 30 children who were trying kids’ athletics for the first time. The ages of the children ranged from 12 to as young as 6 years of age. The children were so eager to participate that they were also involved in putting together the different equipment and helped with the set-up of the stations.

The Suva Oldies Rugby officials were very impressed with the program and that they were interested in having kids’ athletics again as part of their program in the future.

The day’s program also included free medical checkups and blood test for all male over the age of 40 for prostate cancer.

As part of the MOU with Think Pacific it was agreed that Athletics Fiji will certify and train the Think Pacific Development Officers and also to provide the kids athletics equipment whenever the need arises. In return Think Pacific will submit a report which should include pictures, videos and stats.

From November 13th – 16th Think Pacific development officers conducted a Kids’ Athletics program up in the Fiji highlands in the province of Nadroga/Navosa at Yalavou Public School where a total of 35 students (17 boys & 18 girls) actively took part.

“It was great to have the Kids’ Athletics kit with us during our outreach and the students loved it. Vinaka vakalevu to you all for the opportunity to use your fantastic equipment and for the training and guidance on how to deliver it effectively.” said Danny Threapleton.

Athletics Fiji would like to thank Think Pacific for promoting Kids Athletics to some of the remote parts of Fiji.  We look forward to working closely with Think Pacific again in the near future.
