2023 Pacific Games – Selection Criteria

This selection criteria has been endorsed by Athletics Fiji, in selecting its team for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

ATHLETES ELIGIBILITY UNDER THE GAMES CHARTER

  1. To be eligible for Team Fiji selection an athlete must hold a Fiji passport and lived in Fiji for a minimum of 5 years (as per Pacific Games Charter). Minimum 3 years for Games between 2023 and 2027 as per World Athletics.
  2. Athletes will be selected based on them satisfying the set criteria by the deadline of September 4, 2023.
  3. All performances must be achieved within the 2022-2023 AF Season (December 2022 – September 2023).
  4. All performances can also be achieved during competitions organized and sanctioned by the World Athletics, its Area Association or any of its Member Federations within the stated period as per No. 3 above.
  5. All overseas-based athletes intending to be part of the Athletics Team to the 2023 Pacific Games must submit official results as per Hi-Tek Meet Manager results report format along with feedback from competition(s) by September 4, 2023.
  6. All athletes selected for individual events must make themselves available for team/relay competition if required.
  7. All Athletes that have qualified under the minimum qualifying standard will be considered. If more than 3 athletes have qualified, the top 3 athletes will be given first priority.
  8. Locally based Athletes must attend 2 of the 3 trials whereby the 3rd and final trial is compulsory:
    1. Pacific Games Trials #1 – 15th July, 2023 (HFC Bank Stadium)
    1. Pacific Games Trials #2 – 5th August, 2023 (HFC Bank Stadium)
    1. Pacific Games Trials #3 – 2nd September, 2023 (HFC Bank Stadium, compulsory)
  9. Athletes selected must be of good standing with Athletics Fiji and FASANOC.
  10. Any Athlete coached by overseas coach/coaches must update the AF team management periodically of training schedules and competition plans.
  11. Once the Athlete achieves the qualifying standard he/she will be periodically monitored by AF team management and coaches.
  12. All Athletes selected must meet Team Fiji and FASANOC Medical Protocols and Assessments as mentioned below.
  13. Priority will be given to the Athletes who do not play other sports competitively once selected into the squad.
  14. All Athletes must meet the COVID-19 Vaccination Criteria as per FASANOC Vaccination Policy.

Final selection will be made on merit taking into consideration athlete development and meeting the objectives of Athletics Fiji and Team Fiji.

  • MEDICAL ASSESMENT

Athletes selected must meet FASANOC and the SOL2023 Organising Committee requirements:

  1. COVID-19 vaccination certificate (this must show completion of a primary series, 2 doses of a 2-dose vaccine or a single dose of the Janssen or Johnson & Johnson vaccine, taken at least one month prior to travel to Solomon Islands).
  2. Medical Protocols and Assessments as mentioned below.
  3. All Athletes must meet the COVID-19 Vaccination Criteria as per FASANOC Vaccination Policy.
  • ATHLETES AGREEMENT

All athletes and officials will be required to sign the FASANOC Team Members Agreement once selected in the Final Team once selected into the training squad which requires them to be disciplined and abide by acceptable codes of behavior required at international level.

  • CHARACTER AND DISCIPLINE

Athletes must demonstrate the necessary discipline and commitment required at elite level to enable them to excel and achieve their personal best at international competitions. Issues of importance:

  1. Professional conduct in all contexts
  2. Team commitment and national pride
  3. Competitive but humble attitude
  4. Positive attitude towards their sports and Team
  5. Fiji Controllable temperament
  • COMPETITION

Athletics Fiji will follow the 2022-2023 competition calendar, which has been published on the Athletics Fiji Website (https://athleticsfiji.com/competition-calendar/) and their results in relation to the Qualifying Standards provided in this Criteria to gauge the athletes’ fitness and performances.

  • COMPULSORY TRAINING

Athletes must meet a requirement attendance of 75-80%. Team management will keep a daily attendance record. Team records of attendance to be included in the final team submission

  • STANDARDS

The sport of Athletics is judged by time, distance and height. Athletics Fiji will follow the qualifying standards provided in this Criteria of Selection for qualification.

  • SELECTION COMMITTEE

The following persons are the members of the Athletics Fiji Selection Committee:

  • APPEAL PROCESS

As per FASANOC’s Selection Justification Policy, “athletes and team officials have an opportunity to appeal their cases if they feel they have been unfairly deprived of the opportunity to represent their sport/country as a member of a Fiji representative Team under the jurisdiction of FASANOC. 

The appellant shall appeal in writing, clearly stating his/her reasons for the appeal. The appeal shall be lodged with the Secretary General/CEO of FASANOC at Fiji Olympic House within 48 hours of the announcement of the decision against which the appeal is made.  Any athlete or official wishing to submit an appeal to the FASANOC APPEALS TRIBUNAL shall do so on the clear understanding that the decision of the Appeals Tribunal shall be binding on all parties.” FASANOC will accept written appeals lodged at Fiji Olympic House (or Suva Apartment Office if Fiji Olympic House is closed) or emailed to ceo@fasanoc.org.fj (Subject APPEAL) BY 5PM, Saturday 23 September 2023.
