Athletics Fiji rekindled their annual grand prix series in hopes of discovering new talent. It was in a similar grand prix event in the late ’80s where former national sprinter Jone Delai was discovered. Delai went on to become the fastest man in the Pacific and held the 100m and 200m Pacific Games records before Banuve Tabakaucoro. The Grand Prix Series offers prizemoney as much as $200 per event for athletes.
Athletics Fiji in a statement said competition would be in the open grade category and points awarded according to the IAAF Scoring Tables. The events to be contested were the 100m, 400m, 800m 5000m, long jump, high jump and shot put. Apart from the Grand Prix races there will also be races conducted for the lower grades.
