Bula! Welcome to the official Instagram of Athletics Fiji

The Athletics Fiji Team at the 2022 Mini Pacific G The Athletics Fiji Team at the 2022 Mini Pacific Games are all set to kick off things in Saipan. Head coach and team manager Albert Miller Snr said that the team were all in good spirits, injury free and ready to go out and compete hard.

The team spent the last couple of days getting used to the humid weather, scorching sun, and the brand-new track at the Oleai Sports Complex.

The Athletics competition begins today (21/06/2022) with 5 athletes taking to the track. Banuve Tabakaucoro, Tony Lemeki, Lasarusa Senibale and Braelynn Yee in the heats of the 100m at 4:15pm (Saipan time). And Avikash Lal in the final of the Men’s 10,000m at 5:15pm.

The athletes received their bibs last night during their team briefing.

Malakai Kaiwalu is another high jump product of Xavier College in Ba like Shawntell Lockington. Kaiwalu shares the national record of 2.09m with sports and radio announcer Antonio Rahiman. He is the 2017 Mini Pacific Games gold medalist.

Despite winning a silver at the Pacific Games in Samoa in 2019 and out of competition due to the pandemic, Kaiwalu thrives under pressure and like his female counterpart, Shawntell Lockington, he can come up clutch on game days. These Xavier College jumpers are just built different. @teamfiji @fasanoc.athletes @fmf_foods_limited

Shawntell Lockington is Ba's golden girl. Having owned almost all the female high jump records in Fiji including the national record, Shawntell is making her 2nd appearance at the Pacific Mini Games and is also the defending Pacific Games champion.

She's always been counted as an underdog at this level but her competitors both local and regional know how clutch she can be. @fmf_foods_limited @fasanoc.athletes @teamfiji @oceaniaathletics

This man needs no introduction. The people's champion from 2019 finally making waves on the regional level and in the Fiji colors.

Karan's first national debut was at this year's Oceania Championships in Mackay where he rana new personal best in the 5000m that saw him qualify for the Commonwealth Games next month.

The Tavua native has forced his way on to the national squad and into the top 10 All time list for Fiji in the 1500m, 3000m and the 5000m. Karan will be facing tough competition from PNG, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands and the Guam runners. Most of whom are seasoned athletes.

Like Amania in the Javelin, Karan is a dark horse with a lot to prove and nothing to lose. @fmf_foods_limited @fasanoc.athletes @teamfiji @oceaniaathletics

Fiji has a rich histroy of multi talented female athletes like Milika Tuivanuavou, Soko Salaniqiqi, Elenani Tinai and now the more recent Fane Sauvakacolo.

Fane went from being a competitive 400m in her junior years of the Coke Games to being one of the nation's best triple jumpers in the later part of her high school years.

The two time all-american adds depth and experience to a fairly young team at this year's mini pacific games.

Amania Veisa is our rep to the Mini Pacific Games in the Men's Javelin. The last 3 years Amania has dominated the spear event in Fiji and has become a regular competitor at the weekly competitions and in turn, his consistency saw him qualify for the Mini Pacific Games this year.

Veisa hails from Yanuca Island, Taveuni and is coached by Mr. Peoko. The former Niusawa Methodist High School student is a medal contender in his debut as a Fiji rep and draws much of his inspiration from pacific games and national record holder Leslie Copeland.
