Athletics Fiji has officially released its 2026 Competition Calendar, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting and pivotal year for the sport nationwide.
The season will get underway next Saturday, 17 January, with the first sanctioned competition to be held at the HFC Bank Stadium, providing athletes, coaches, and officials an early opportunity to test form and set the tone for the months ahead.
The 2026 season carries significant importance as Athletics Fiji prepares for a demanding international calendar. Central to this will be the 2026 Oceania Championships in Darwin, Australia, with the national team expected to be named by the end of February. Selection events over the coming weeks will be critical as athletes strive to meet qualifying standards and stake their claim for national representation.
Beyond Oceania, the year also features major global events, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, and the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. These competitions present invaluable pathways for Fiji’s senior, junior, and emerging athletes to gain high-level international exposure and experience.
Selection Criteria for the various games and championships will be circulated later.
Domestically, the calendar remains equally strong. The Fiji Secondary Schools’ Coca-Cola Championships, scheduled for late April, once again promises to be a highlight of the sporting year, showcasing the nation’s finest school-based talent and continuing its legacy as the heartbeat of athletics development in Fiji. The season will conclude with the Primary Schools’ Championships, reinforcing Athletics Fiji’s commitment to grassroots participation and long-term athlete development.
Importantly, Athletics Fiji will be using the 2026 season to deliberately build momentum towards the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti. Following the foundations laid during the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, this year will focus on strengthening athlete pathways, improving performance consistency, and deepening competition exposure across all levels. Athletics Fiji encourages all athletes, coaches, schools, and clubs to engage fully with the 2026 calendar, prepare diligently, and be part of a season that not only celebrates competition but also drives the continued growth and success of athletics in Fiji.
