OUR RAKESA JAVELIN'S TO 6TH PLACE IN MEN'S F41 FINAL
Fiji's Iosefa Rakesa finished 6th in the Men's F41 Javelin final with a throw of 39.95m on the last day of Fiji's competition at the 2019 Dubai Para Athletics Championship.
Team Coach Albert Miller was impressed with Rakesa's efforts adding that the throw was his best so far. "Iosefa is gradually picking up confidence thus the need for more international exposure and I further believe that the time frame between us now and 2020 should enable us to fully prepare ourselves well in Tokyo". Event winner Sun P of China had set a benchmark of 44.35 followed by W.Nukhailawi of Iraq at 43.96 and third winner K.AbdulRaheem also of Iraq at 42.24.

Mr Miller adds that team Fiji now looks forward to the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

Banuve caps off a long season with a 10.56s. "He was fifth fastest in the Preliminary Round, when he came second in his heat in10.56 seconds. He then went on to Round One of the 100m and finished in 8th position in 10.56 seconds. Banuve was the only one out of the 11 Pacific Islanders at the world champs in the men's 100m to have qualified for Round One. The temperatures in the Khalifa Stadium are perfect for sprinting dropping to a low 33 degrees in the evening and a 73% humidity" -Bob Snow "He did well after three years away and back to this level. His body is a little shocked from a long season. Was good performance overall" -Coach Bola Tafo'ou
Instagram post 2138358619430143739_4868131649 Athletics Fiji would like to congratulate Banuve Tabakaucoro on his selection to represent Fiji at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Its exactly a year ago that Banuve first stepped on the local competitive scene after an almost career ending injury which he sustained in rugby.

His first race back in September, 2018, Banuve ran an impressive 10.83s and then further dropping it down to 10.60s in his 2nd race of the season. He was back!!
Banuve continued to impress coaches and selectors over the season as he solidified his spot on the team to the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa where he slashed the Pacific Game’s record in the 100m final in a time of 10.31s. He completed his sprint double/triple after winning the 200m and anchoring home the 4x100m relay ahead of Samoa’s Olympic hopeful, Jeremy Dodson.

Banuve became the first Pacific Islander/Fijian Sprinter to have won the 100m & 200m for 3 Pacific Games in a row AND POSSIBLY the only Fijian Athlete to make a come back after a 2 year absence from the sport and still perform at an exceptional level.

Banuve and his coach Bola Tafao'ou have been spending strenuous hours at the gym and track since the Pacific Games preparing themselves for the World Championships and are very optimistic of a good outing as Banuve sets his sights on hoping to qualify for Japan 2020.

The athlete coach duo have been fortunate enough to have their trip funded by IAAF, Athletics Fiji and Fiji National Sports Commission. They both leave for Doha tomorrow where he will be competing in the 100m. We wish him all the best!!
